Exploiting neural plasticity for visual rehabilitation

Brief perturbations to sensory experience have the capacity to drive lifelong changes in the nervous system. We are interested in understanding the consequences of such sensory perturbations on neural activity, and how to recapitulate this activity to drive long-lasting therapeutic plasticity. In this talk, I present examples of how we have tackled these goals in animal models of amblyopia, a widespread form of human visual impairment. I first discuss the plasticity that underlies amblyopia, and critical periods for both the development of disability and response to treatment. Next, I will present work we have done to identify and validate plasticity-based interventions for treating amblyopia in mice and cats. I then present ongoing work on our efforts to understand how activity and plasticity in the early visual pathway contribute to visual recovery. I conclude with a broad outlook on the synergy between high-tech neuroprosthetics and low-cost simple therapeutics to advance both basic and translational research.
