Sphingolipids in Vision and Beyond: Signaling Pathways and Disease Links
Sphingolipids are more than structural components of cell membranes; they are powerful signaling molecules that influence cell survival, inflammation, and metabolic balance. In this seminar, Dr. Nawajes Mandal will discuss how alterations in sphingolipid metabolism contribute to the development of retinal and corneal diseases, including degenerative and inflammatory disorders. He will also highlight emerging applications of sphingolipidomics in identifying lipid-based biomarkers for ocular surface (dry eye) disease and systemic metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes. By bridging basic lipid biology with translational research, Dr. Mandal’s work reveals how targeting sphingolipid pathways can open new avenues for diagnosis and therapy in vision-threatening and metabolic diseases.
Faculty Host: Alecia K. Gross, PhD, FARVO
Onsite attendance will account for one Alabama CE credit for ODs.
