Virtual Classroom Engagement: Lessons Learned from Online Summer Camp
Tuesday, September 8, 2020 4pm to 5:15pm
About this Event
Please join us for this FREE workshop on Zoom to learn about tips and tricks used to keep our students engaged and learning on a virtual platform at UAB's ArtPlay* K-12 summer camps. The session will include ideas and examples of student engagement, classroom management, and general tips and tricks that are applicable across disciplines and useful when teaching K-12 on any virtual platform.
Teachers will learn how to:
> Set up a workspace in advance;
> Create a timeline for each day, even if you do not always stick to it, and add more breaks;
> Set ground rules for using technology correctly and respectfully;
> Address fears and worries and get to know students;
> Lead students through activities and make sure they are responding to instruction;
> Use dual screens so students can see you and your work;
> Brainstorm ideas for engagement; for camps, these included low-stakes activities such as theme days, pet sharing time, decorate your workspace, bingo cards and “closet cosplay,” for which students created a costume at home; and
> Use movement when possible.
Presentations will be followed by Q&A and participant engagement opportunity.
Zoom information available upon registering.
