Vigil for Tyre Nichols

This is a past event.

This past week, body cam footage from six officers from the Memphis Police Department surfaced of the murder of Tyre Nichols. On January 7th, Tyre was pulled over by Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith who were all fired and charged with second degree murder and kidnapping.

Tyre Nichols' last moments were spent calling out to his mother. In these moments, we remember George Floyd's voice echo from 2020 and Emmett Till’s memory from 1955. These moments in time are not rare occurrences, but a pattern of harm toward black people that the United States continues to enforce.

As the Black Student Awareness Committee, it is our obligation to our students to speak on and speak out against injustice, not only on campus, but within our country. BSAC'S goal is to raise awareness and advocate for students at UAB.

Feel free to bring posters, or come to the SMDP office (Hill Student Center, suite 311) to make some posters.
