About this Event
Join the Lifespan Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center for our February Seminar Series featuring Vivien Sheehan, MD, PhD speaking on Use of Red Cell Function Tests in Sickle Cell Disease Clinical Trials and Patient Care.
After completing a PhD in Biochemistry, Dr. Sheehan went to medical school at Emory University; there, she decided to devote her career to the study of SCD. To care for individuals with SCD of all ages, Dr. Sheehan completed an Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency program at the University of Cincinnati, then a self-designed combined Internal Medicine Hematology-Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship. Dr. Sheehan’s laboratory uses genomics to unravel the mechanisms of globin switching, and of transition from acute to chronic pain in SCD to develop new agents to treat people with SCD. The Sheehan lab also develops biomarkers based on red cell function, using oxygen gradient ektacytometry, adhesive microfluidics, and dense cells as biomarkers for use in clinical trials of novel pharmaceutical agents, and to assess curative intent of cell-based therapies.
