Presented for UAB faculty by Marliese Thomas and Brooke Becker. Media manipulation may not be new, but the tactics are becoming much more sophisticated and hard to discern. From commonplace filters to AI-generated fakes, how do we know what’s “real”? In this workshop, we will look at examples of “deepfakes” and other fake images and talk about tips for evaluating media for classwork and everyday life.

Registration is strongly encouraged for in-person attendance so that we can notify participants of any unexpected schedule changes and ensure that we have the correct amount of food if a meal is provided. UAB faculty are always welcome to show up to in-person CTL events without registering. However, if you do attend without registering, we ask that if food is being served, you wait until all pre-registered participants have gotten their food before serving yourself.

As a public institution of higher education, UAB adheres to principles of Free Speech, Civil Discourse and Institutional Neutrality. Freedom of Expression and Use of UAB Facilities Policy allows members of the UAB community to hold events on campus; views expressed do not represent the university, which adheres to institutional neutrality. Events held at UAB are required to comply with all applicable state and federal laws, and participation is not limited based on impermissible criteria (e.g., age, gender, race, national origin, sexual orientation).
