The UAB CRRT Academy was founded by Dr. Ashita Tolwani and has been an annual event since 2007. The academy includes attendees coming from all over the United States as well as from overseas. In addition to lectures, we have hands-on workshops, simulations, and problem-solving sessions to allow an in-depth understanding of CRRT.
The symposium is a two-and-a-half-day event, plus a half-day Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) pre-course. After a day of didactic content and case studies, participants spend the second-viewing hands-on using simulation.
THE PRE-COURSE AND MAIN COURSE SHOULD BE PURCHASED SEPERATELY
-
Pre-course: POCUS to assist fluid management with CRRT. Hands-on module rotations with human models to gather skills in (1) lung ultrasound, (2) inferior vena cava ultrasound, (3) venous excess ultrasonography (VExUS), and (4) pulsed wave Doppler of the left ventricular outflow track to estimate stroke volume (i.e., velocity time integral).
- Main course: Didactic and interactive sessions to cover basics of CRRT (e.g., patient selection, modality, timing, dose, prescription, anticoagulation, access, membrane, circuit, alarms, troubleshooting) and advanced sessions to learn about specific solute control calculations, nutrition and medication dosing considerations, quality assurance, and novel therapies of blood purification.
