The Salon is an exhibition of art created by students in the UAB Department of Art and Art History. Inspired by the Salon des Refusés of 19th-century France, this UAB student exhibition features many of the excellent artworks that were submitted to—but not chosen for—the 46th Annual Juried Student Exhibition.

When jurors choose art for juried exhibitions, they make curatorial choices for the exhibition as a whole, often choosing works not only for their artistic excellence but also for their overall cohesion as an exhibition. Therefore, some excellent works are not selected; there simply isn’t enough room in the gallery. As history shows us, sometimes the best, most innovative art is in the category of des refusés.

As a public institution of higher education, UAB adheres to principles of Free Speech, Civil Discourse and Institutional Neutrality. Freedom of Expression and Use of UAB Facilities Policy allows members of the UAB community to hold events on campus; views expressed do not represent the university, which adheres to institutional neutrality. Events held at UAB are required to comply with all applicable state and federal laws, and participation is not limited based on impermissible criteria (e.g., age, gender, race, national origin, sexual orientation).
