The Center for Teaching and Learning is now offering related workshop content as “building blocks” towards certificates. Choose a topic that works with your schedule, and commit for 90 minutes of professional development, on the same day and at the same time, for three weeks.  If you attend all three workshops, you’ll also be eligible to complete an assignment designed to help you apply the content of the block in your professional practice. For completing the full block, you’ll receive 35,000 points towards a CTL certificate.  However, we know that schedules can shift unexpectedly, so even if you can’t come to every workshop, you’ll still get points for the ones you attend.

The Basics of AI for UAB Teachers - CTL Building Block

Have you jumped into the waters of AI at UAB yet?  If not, take a bit of time this summer to investigate at least a bit of what AI means for you as a UAB educator.  This introductory series will also introduce you to the basics of prompt generation and how you might use AI to redesign an element of a course—or a course itself.

• October 21, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM - Developing AI Literacy for Teaching (What does it mean to be AI-literate as a teacher or learner? Suitable for any instructor, from those who have never used Generative AI to experienced power users, this workshop presents a research-based framework for AI literacy and offers up-to-date guidance on how AI works, how to prompt it effectively, and how to critically evaluate its output.)
• October 28, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM - Reimagining Learning and Assessment in the AI Age (This workshop presents a range of strategies and techniques for teaching and assessment that both preserve critical thinking and, where appropriate, leverage GenAI to enhance student learning. Participants will apply what they learn here as preparation for the following workshop in which they will focus on a specific course and develop a new teaching or assignment sequence.)
• November 4, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM - Redesign Your Assignment/Your Course (In this session, participants are guided through a structured protocol to help them envision, create, and get feedback on a new assignment or course designed to best support learning in the GenAI era. Participants will work independently, with GenAI tools, and in small groups, receiving feedback and support throughout.

Please Note: This workshop is designed for current UAB teaching faculty, instructors of record, academic advisors, and other student-facing staff members. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to attend the CTL LIFT series workshops instead.
