Presented by Dr. Thomas (“Toma”) Desvignes, Assistant Professor, UAB Department of Biology

Fish account for more than half of vertebrate species and are found in almost every aquatic environment on the planet, from the surface to ocean trenches, from pole to pole, from marine to freshwater. But aquatic ecosystems are at risk from environmental change and human activities. We, however, still have limited understanding of the true extent of fish biodiversity and how sensitive fish are to ecological disturbance.

In this talk, Dr. Desvignes will present some of my work on Antarctic fish, including the white-blooded icefish, true evolutionary oddities living without hemoglobin. I will also present new research directions my lab will take to study and help protect local fish from Alabama, North America’s Amazon.
