There is perhaps no piece by Martin Luther King, Jr. that is more widely read or more beloved than the “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Countless articles and books have been written about its generation and meaning. In her forthcoming book, The Emotions of Nonviolence (Oxford University Press, April 2025), Dr. Meena Krishnamurthy revisits King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” to uncover a novel account of how moral emotions motivate nonviolent action, and, reciprocally, how protest, images, letters, and oratory can engage these emotions to motivate transformative political action. Join us for a conversation about the significance and legacy of Dr. King’s famous letter. Dr. Meena Krishnamurthy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Queen’s University, where she works on democracy, race, social movements, and political psychology.
