Join the UAB Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center for our monthly Speaker Series featuring Shaunte' Webb Austin and Sonja Smith.
Shaunte’ Webb Austin is an Outreach Coordinator for the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center in the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology. She comes as an experienced professional with supporting the Birmingham community through volunteering and project development.
Shaunte' has over 10 years of experience in sales and marketing while working for well-known media groups such as Cox Radio Incorporated which is now Summit Media and Clear Channel Radio, Incorporated.
Shaunte’ has worked in the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology as the assistant to Dr. Ravi Bhatia and with other physicians. She comes with passion and dedication in raising awareness for the department of Sickle Cell and the Sickle Cell Community.
Sonja Smith is the Program Manager for the UAB Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. She has a background in music with degrees from Birmingham-Southern College and Louisiana State University. After graduating LSU, Sonja taught at the high school and junior college levels in Chicago. Upon her return to Birmingham, she began working in the non-profit and public service sectors at AIDS Alabama and the City of Birmingham. With the launch of the Affordable Care Act, Sonja managed the state’s largest federally funded navigator grant. Afterwards, she served as Deputy Director of the City’s Negro Southern League Museum.
As the District 8 Birmingham Board of Education Representative, Sonja, along with other school district leaders, participated in Harvard’s Public Education Leadership Project to help public schools improve student performance. In August 2021, she was elected to serve a second term on Birmingham School Board and was announced as a member of the 2022 Leadership Birmingham class. Through her community service activities, Sonja has served in leadership roles as well as a board member for the Birmingham Museum of Art, Flourish Alabama, and Birmingham Public Library.
