http://go.uab.edu/onthefarmAs symbols of independence and the rewards of hard work, few things are more quintessentially American than the family farm. But small farms in the U.S. have been struggling to survive. And it isn’t just the farms that are at risk – it’s farmers. Farmers have experienced high suicide rates, addiction, depression, and stress-related illness, all made worse because the problems often remain hidden. Like many Americans, farmers are reluctant to acknowledge mental health issues, and they are unlikely to use resources that aren’t easily accessible to people living in rural areas.
Join us for a special screening of “On the Farm,” an Emmy-winning mini-series that details the experiences of four Mississippi and Alabama farmers as they deal with the daily stresses of farm life. With the help of Associate Producer and UAB School of Public Health and College of Arts and Sciences alumnus Dr. David Buys, we’ll take part in a guided discussion to better understand the struggles these farmers face and to learn what resources are available. With additional guest speaker Dr. Suzanne Judd of the UAB School of Public Health, we’ll also hear about current projects focused on rural health and next steps.
Registration is required for this in-person event as dinner will be served.
