Designing and 3D printing is easier than ever using modern digital applications. Fusion360 is an advanced computer-aided drafting (CAD) design tool that is free for educational use. Join our Emerging Technologies Librarian Greg Carr for a closer look as we explore features and topics that will enable you to design your own custom creation that can be then be 3D printed (if you have already completed the 3D printing training). Topics covered and demoed will include creating a unique 3D box with detached lid, object customization, and the copyright & fair use implications of 3D design and printing.

This is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) event. Having a laptop to follow instructions during the workshop is highly recommended. Library laptops can also be checked out from the HUB Desk if needed. If you would like to follow the directions during this workshop to create an 3D object, please register for a free Fusion 360 for education licence using your @uab.edu email and download and install Fusion 360 on your device before attending this workshop

This session will be of special interest to any library users who are interested in designing and 3D printing their own personal project, want to develop a deeper, practical understanding of digital modeling and publishing.

By the end of this workshop attendees will:

  • Have the digital files a customized box and detached lid printable file for personal use (note: 3D printer training must be completed before printer access is granted)
  • Be able to utilize the basic design functions of Fusion 360 to create 3D digital objects.
  • Will have a working understanding of the applicable copyright and fair use laws of digital objects
