Dr. Maddox is Vice President, Digital Products and Innovation, at BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine, leading their Health Innovation Lab team and their Digital Products team. He is also a practicing cardiologist and Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Washington University School of Medicine.

The Healthcare Innovation Lab team catalyzes care delivery innovation through research and development at BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine. To date, the Lab has developed innovations in predictive analytics/artificial intelligence (AI), digital point-of-care tools, and remote patient monitoring.  Specific innovations include AI-enabled predictive models in inpatient care, critical care, and palliative care patient populations; a digitally enabled patient transportation program for ambulatory and cancer patients; digitally enabled incentive spirometers for post-op patients; digitally enabled pressure ulcer detection sensors for ICU patients; inpatient sleep optimization programs; remote patient monitoring programs for heart failure, post-operative, COVID-19, and diabetic patients; and generative AI applications to support clinician documentation and communication.

The BJC Digital Products team is responsible for executing a digital strategy to support the BJC HealthCare enterprise goals of a personalized, frictionless health care experience for patients, families, communities, and care teams. The team develops, deploys, and supports digital tools (aka digital products) to enable optimal healthcare experiences for consumers, patients, clinical teams, and business teams.  The team uses modern digital product methods (i.e., user research and design, cross-functional product teams, Agile delivery methods) to execute its work.  Current products include website, physician directories, online scheduling for primary and preventative care, digital communication, ancillary service scheduling, and a virtual nursing program to assist bedside nurses in patient care.

In addition to these roles, Dr. Maddox is a Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Washington University School of Medicine. He is a practicing non-invasive cardiologist, a trained epidemiologist, and an accomplished health services researcher.  Dr. Maddox is well known for his contributions to digital transformation, healthcare delivery innovation, learning healthcare systems, and health services research in cardiac quality and safety. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Digital Health Action Collaborative and the Healthcare Innovators Professional Society. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and received multiple grants exploring optimal care delivery. He has also translated his quality-of-care research to clinical practice by designing and directing a national cardiology quality and safety program (CART) at the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). He is a leader in cardiology professional societies and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the American College of Cardiology. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology, an elected fellow of the American Heart Association, and an elected member of the American Clinical and Climatological Association.
