The Brown Bag: Lecture Series is hosted by the UAB African American Studies Program. The series explores and addresses the various issues related to the Black Diaspora. Each month, faculty and scholars will be invited to facilitate conversations on the diaspora and its relevance to contemporary issues.

Dr. Andy Baer is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and the African American Studies Program. His research focuses on the intersection of race, policing, and social movements. His first book, Beyond the Usual Beating: The Jon Burge Police Torture Scandal and Social Movements for Police Accountability in Chicago, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2020. He is now working on a second book project, tentatively titled  Black and Missing, that explores issues of race and missing persons from the Jim Crow era to the period of Black Lives Matter.
