Inaugural Lewis Lecture guest speaker Fritz Gesztesy, Baylor University, will present a talk titled "The Krein Extension: Basics and some Concrete Applications."

Dedicated to the Memory of Roger Lewis (1942 - 2021)

Abstract: We will describe the basic ideas underlying self-adjoint extensions of a nonnegative symmetric operator T in a Hilbert space and focus particularly on the case of nonnegative self-adjoint extensions of T. Special attention will be given to the extremal cases of the Friedrichs and Krein extensions and the precise connection to an abstract buckling problem in the latter case.

Concrete applications to Laplacians on bounded Lipschitz domains and their Weyl asymptotics, and singular Sturm-Liouville operators and their self-adjoint boundary conditions in terms of generalized boundary values, will be given.
