About this Event
1400 University Blvd, Birmingham, AL 35233
Dr. Frans B. M. de Waal, C. H. Candler Professor Emeritus at Emory University and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Utrecht University, will deliver a Jemison Visiting Professorship in the Humanities Lecture entitled "Different: Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist."
How different are men and women? Do they differ naturally or artificially? Do we find the same differences in our fellow primates? Do apes learn sex roles, too, or is “gender” uniquely human?
In his recent book “Different: Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist,” world-renowned primatologist Frans de Waal examines these questions and more, drawing on studies of both human and animal behavior to argue that a distinction between (cultural) gender and (biological) sex is useful to draw attention to the eternal interplay between nature and nurture.
During his Jemison Lecture, Frans de Waal will share his research and some of the findings included in “Different.” A reception will be held at 5:00 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m.
