AMWA: Creating a Service-Focused Career

The Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion AMWA chapter is hosting its first in a series of sessions on creating a service-focused career. During this meeting, attendees will learn how others at Heersink have attained promotion through excellence in service, an area that allows for one's efforts and creativity to flourish.

Leading this talk is:

  • Anna Hurst, M.D., M.S.
  • Carlie Stein, M.D.

Speakers
Dr. Jessica Fazendin is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed her general surgery residency in Philadelphia at Hahnemann University Hospital/Drexel University College of Medicine. She completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her clinical interests include hyperparathyroidism, benign and malignant thyroid conditions, benign and malignant adrenal disease and complex management of inherited endocrine syndromes. 

Dr. Anna Hurst is an associate professor of medical genetics in the department of genetics at UAB and an adjunct faculty member at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. She trained as a genetic counselor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and then completed her medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her clinical interests include syndrome delineation, dysmorphology, and genome sequencing for pediatric patients with rare, undiagnosed diseases.

Dr. Carlie Stein Somerville is a Birmingham native and received her doctorate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2013. She completed Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency in 2017 and served as chief resident during her final year of residency. Her clinical duties include seeing patients of all ages in a Med-Peds primary care practice, attending on the inpatient teaching wards and resident clinics. She is passionate about primary care across the lifespan, medical education, care of underserved patients, advocacy, and about improving transition those with chronic diseases as they move from the pediatric to adult system.
