Michael Jones, retired executive director for the State of Alabama Purchasing Department, will share processes for assessing the need for capacity development; analyzing current options, such as cooperatives; group purchasing and how to implement the most effective growth strategies.
Strategic sourcing is the order of the day, and some purchasing organizations are finding new ways to create alignment with DBE suppliers. Included are real-life examples of DBE firms that are bigger, more experienced, and more competitive by using GPOs and cooperatives. They will discuss how they work, the benefits and global impact.
About the Speaker
Michael A. Jones is a graduate of Troy University receiving a B.S. degree in Computer Information Science and Business Administration. Michael began his career with the State of Alabama in 1990 with the Alabama Department of Finance as a Programmer with the Financial Resource Management System (FRMS) team. Mr. Jones has since worked in the Department of Public Health Information Technology Division, overseeing purchasing, personnel, payroll and budgeting for over 130 employees.
In 2009, Michael returned to the Department of Finance and became the State Purchasing Deputy Director. In July, 2010, Michael was sworn in by then Governor Bob Riley in the role of State Purchasing Director. During his tenure, he was part of several statewide system initiatives and led the division through many legislative changes in an effort to bring efficiency and continued process improvements.
While serving as State Purchasing Director, he was also a member of the National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) where he served as the National President and in 2022 received the Association’s highest honors as the recipient of the Guilio Mazzone Distinguished Service Award.
After 32 years of service to the State of Alabama, Michael retired in May of 2022 and is currently working as a consultant with Michael A. Jones, Consulting.
