Black Creativity in Puerto Rico

Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro has published numerous books that promote the discussion of Black and LGBTQ+ identities in Puerto Rico. She has organized and led the “Chair of Ancestral Black Women Studies,” a group of creative writers and thinkers who explore this under-represented group on the island. Her short story collection las Negras (2013) won the PEN Club of Puerto Rico National Short Story Award. She delivered a speech to the United Nations about African enslavement in 2015. Her novel Violeta (2013) and other works explore lesbian identity. She has won three awards from the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (2008, 2012, 2015) and the El Nuevo Día Book of the Year prize (Ojos de luna, 2007). Her works have been translated into five languages. She is a regular contributor to Puerto Rican newspapers Claridad and La Expresión.
