Beyond Verbal Language: Pragmatic Considerations across Five Cultures

This is a past event.

Based on experiences communicating in Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, British and American English, Dr. Brender will provide several pragmatic considerations beyond simply getting the pronunciation and syntax right!

What things should or should not be talked about in different cultures? How should information be conveyed with speakers of different languages? Are rules about modesty the same everywhere? Do gestures and smiles in different cultures have different meanings? What are examples of cultural values that are inherent or perhaps inescapable in certain languages?

Join this interactive presentation that promises to save you from otherwise inevitable pitfalls and embarrassment while forcing you to think about things you've never thought about before.
