When it comes to contemporary moral issues, it seems that most people are unmoved by evidence and argument. But such pessimism is often based on caricatures of reasoning, weak scientific evidence, and flawed interpretations of solid evidence. In support of optimism, I discuss how several forms of moral reasoning can spur changes in attitudes and behavior on a variety of issues, such as gay rights, charitable giving, meat consumption, and environmental protection. Moral reasoning, particularly when socially-embedded, is integral to moral progress.
