Title: "From Molecules to the Clinic: Building the Health Data Utility of Tomorrow"

Abstract: A core goal of biomedical informatics is to support clinical decision making with the right data, in the right way, to the right person, and at the right time. The promise of genomic medicine complements this goal by introducing molecular information that can refine our understanding of disease risk, biological variation, and therapeutic response. Despite the potential to connect molecular and clinical data to inform clinical decision making, these domains largely remain separate in practice. The emergence of the health data utility (HDU) concept offers an opportunity to bridge this divide by treating longitudinal, multisource health data, including both molecular and clinical data, as ubiquitous infrastructure for supporting clinical care, public health, population health, and research. This presentation will trace a trajectory from translational bioinformatics to regional health information exchange and the emerging HDU model, illustrating how diverse data can be integrated to support clinical and population-level decision making. In so doing, the presentation will propose a framework for a next-generation HDU that integrates molecular, clinical, public health, social, and environmental data to support decision making across individual and population contexts.

Biography: Neil Sarkar is Associate Professor of Medical Science and Associate Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice as well as the Founding Director if the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Brown University. Dr. Sarkar’s research focuses on how the integration of unlinked data leads to new information that can be used to inform knowledge about underpinning phenomena in biology and health. His current research includes harnessing data for supporting comparative genomic and phenomic studies of complex disease, including the development of models to predict trajectories of complex conditions. Dr. Sarkar’s work has been funded the National Science Foundation, the Ellison Medical Foundation, the Medical Library Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sarkar is an elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Medical Informatics Association. He has served on the editorial boards for the leading journals in biomedical informatics, including the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, and Methods of Information in Medicine, and he is is the Founding Editor-and-Chief of JAMIA Open, a Gold Open Access journal launched in 2017. He authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles spanning topics from comparative genomics using phylogenetic approaches to population-level trend detection and predictive modeling in clinical and public health, and edited Methods in Biomedical Informatics: A Pragmatic Approach, a major text used in biomedical informatics education.

We provide case studies and resources for participants to review outside of the course, with the 1-hour virtual weekly meeting serving as a forum to discuss mentoring topics, emerging issues, and case studies of interest to participants within that theme.

Discussions include all participants, whether they are new to the mentoring process or experienced mentors. This inclusive format allows individuals at any level to participate and learn. Sessions are not recorded to allow a free discussion.

WHAT: A series of eight presentations on topics related to the nuances of the mentor-mentee relationship.

WHEN: Tuesdays, 11am-12pm, September 8-November 3, 2026

WHO: Open to investigators at any level from across the CCTS Partner Network, from pre-doctoral students to seasoned faculty members who mentor developing research scientists.

Biography: Dr. Ianov has considerable formal training in genetics, neuroscience, omics sequencing approaches, and bioinformatics analyses and development. Dr. Ianov is Co-Director of the UAB Biological Data Science Core (U-BDS - https://www.uab.edu/cores/ircp/bds) and bioinformatics specialist of the Neurodevelopmental Bioinformatics Initiative from the CIRC. Dr. Ianov provides assistance to researchers in the biomedical community from UAB in the design, execution, and analysis of high-throughput sequencing studies with a focus on transcriptomics, epigenomics, single-cell/nuclei approaches. She and her team also provide support for the development of secondary pipelines and custom web applications.

Sessions are presented by experienced clinical and translational researchers or individuals with special expertise in grants and contracts and regulatory issues across the CCTS Partner Network. CTSTP serves as a catalytic career launch for investigators at multiple stages and in a variety of roles, leading to new professional appointments, successful extramural funding, promotion and tenure.

Course content represents the following modules: Clinical Trials, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Ethics, Qualitative Research, Outcomes Research, Dissemination of Results, and AI and Machine Learning.

The CTSTP course can be taken for a certificate of completion or as the course EPI 680: Topics in Clinical Research.

WHO: Faculty, investigators at multiple stages, those interested in an academic career in research
WHEN: Wednesdays, 8-10 AM, starting January 13, 2027, through May 26, 2027.

Participants join small cohorts in basic or clinical science for weekly instruction, one-on-one coaching, and feedback to craft a competitive proposal for submission within six months.

Program fee: $4,500
