Scholar Profile

Title: "Why Prediction Is Not Enough: Causal Artificial Intelligence for Health Decision‑Making"

Abstract: Artificial intelligence has shown remarkable success in healthcare prediction, yet predictive accuracy alone is insufficient to support clinical and public health decision‑making. Health data are deeply biased, and large language models (LLMs) often fail when asked to reason about cause-effect mechanisms and hypothetical interventions or counterfactuals. This talk argues that advancing from prediction to action requires embedding causal reasoning into AI systems. Through real‑world use cases, we examine the limitations of current medical LLMs, particularly their fragility under complex causal framing, and reflect on the opportunities of methodological development and establishment of effective benchmarks.

Biography: Mattia Prosperi, PhD, FACMI, is a Professor, Associate Dean for AI and Innovation at the University of Florida (UF), and Chief Research Information Officer for the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute. With a background in computer engineering, he has over two decades of experience in biomedical informatics, epidemiology, and health AI, leading impactful research programs through NIH, NSF, the European Commission, and industry partners. Dr. Prosperi’s most current research thrusts focus on causal health AI, i.e., developing methods that move beyond prediction to enable intervention-driven, counterfactual AI reasoning for optimizing decision and policy making. In his administrative roles at UF, he oversees advancing AI infrastructure, education, and multimodal data integration initiatives.

Scharpf is a board‑certified surgeon who serves as Director of Head and Neck Endocrine Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic with Focused Practice Designation in Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Disease. He specializes in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, head and neck cancer, benign tumors, and skull base surgery. He completed his medical training at Ohio State University, residency at the Cleveland Clinic, and fellowship in advanced head and neck cancer and endocrine surgery at the University of Iowa. Scharpf is widely published, an active educator, and a member of several major professional societies.

This monthly office hours meeting began in 2023 to provide a supportive forum for early career investigators working in addiction prevention and treatment to seek mentorship and practical guidance on research design, clinical implementation, policy translation, and funding opportunities.

Discussion Focus Areas

Clinical Research Design: Participants discuss strategies for designing feasible and ethically sound clinical studies that address real-world treatment and prevention challenges. Emphasis is placed on integrating patient-centered outcomes and leveraging community partnerships.Policy and Practice Integration: Faculty mentors provide insight into translating scientific findings into actionable policy recommendations, including ways to engage stakeholders and communicate evidence effectively.Funding Opportunities: Attendees review current NIH and foundation funding mechanisms for clinician-scientists, including early career awards, pilot grants, and training mechanisms. The group shares tips on proposal framing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and aligning projects with funding priorities.Networking and Mentorship: The group highlights the value of continued peer connection, cross-disciplinary dialogue, and access to experienced mentors in addiction medicine and behavioral science.

This webinar highlights how meal timing can influence overall health and daily well-being. You'll learn what intermittent fasting is, how its main approaches differ, and what research shows about the effects of skipping breakfast or eating later in the evening.

Dr. Altonji will cover how fasting patterns may impact blood sugar, cardiovascular risk factors, and weight management - even when the scale doesn't change. The discussion also explores how eating windows relate to healthy aging and long-term metabolic function.

About Our Guest

Dr. Altonji is a postdoctoral fellow in the UAB Nutrition Obesity Research Center and the Department of Nutrition Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in Nutrition Science from Auburn University before joining Dr. Courtney Peterson's lab at UAB, where she contributes to clinical trials focused on time-restricted eating, a form of intermittent fasting.

Her work centers on understanding how eating patterns influence blood sugar regulation and the function of adipose tissue, commonly known as body fat. Dr. Altonji brings a research-driven perspective to the study of meal timing and metabolic health, adding insights into how carefully structured eating approaches may support long-term wellness.

Dr. Fayron Epps is a distinguished nurse leader and researcher specializing in dementia care, family caregiving, and health disparities. She serves as Professor and holds the Karen and Ronald Herrmann Distinguished Chair in Caregiver Research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing. Internationally recognized for her community-engaged scholarship, Dr. Epps partners with faith communities to improve dementia care and expand access to culturally relevant resources. Lloyd is a fourth-year PhD student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto in the Rollinson Lab, where he investigates the genetic architecture of temperature-dependent sex determination in reptiles using quantitative genomics. His research integrates population genetics, developmental physiology, and climate change biology to better understand how environmental and genetic factors interact to shape sex ratios in natural populations.

Lloyd has over a decade of experience working with vertebrate systems, primarily herpetofauna, with additional experience in mammal and bird conservation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and marine ecology work in the Gulf of Mexico at Dauphin Island Sea Lab. He completed his undergraduate degree in 2017 at Auburn University, followed by his Master’s degree in 2020 from the University of South Alabama, where he researched gopher tortoise ecology and spatial distribution in southwest Alabama, before working as a wetlands ecologist for several years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers–Mobile District.

He currently resides in Ontario, Canada, where he conducts long-term mark–recapture research on painted turtles in Algonquin Provincial Park, focusing on sex ratio dynamics and genome-wide variation in the subject population. In addition to his research, Robin teaches several courses at the University of Toronto, including vertebrate biodiversity and community ecology, as well as field courses in the temperate forests of Canada and the tropical rainforests of the Peruvian Amazon.

In this training, faculty will learn about the backward design process, create measurable learning objectives, learn about library resources and copyright, and explore types of activities, assessments, and instructional materials that align with those objectives. They will also have an opportunity to share ideas for their course and receive feedback from peers and the OLT Instructional Designers. Faculty who complete the training will earn the Designing Your Course certificate.

Please Note: This workshop is designed for current UAB teaching faculty, instructors of record, academic advisors, and other student-facing staff members. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to attend the CTL LIFT series workshops instead.

Participants (ages 9–18) will learn real magic tricks using the Hocus Focus™ curriculum developed by internationally recognized illusionist Kevin Spencer—all while building confidence, creativity, and connection.

Through this evidence-based program led by trained UAB occupational therapy students, campers don’t just learn magic—they strengthen motor skills, boost motivation, and develop social and emotional skills in a fun and supportive environment.

The presentation will feature Emily Tarconish, Ph.D., Teaching Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and will be moderated by Jennifer Christy, Ph.D., Interim Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs in the UAB School of Health Professions.

Students with disabilities represent one of the fastest-growing populations in postsecondary education, yet they continue to experience unequal academic outcomes compared to their peers without disabilities. A major barrier identified by these students is the lack of instructor awareness regarding their needs, along with limited use of accessible and inclusive teaching practices.

Dr. Emily Tarconish will explore key theoretical frameworks related to disability and accessibility and introduce practical, inclusive teaching strategies designed to promote access and engagement for all learners. By examining how these approaches reduce common barriers, this presentation demonstrates how intentional course design can better support students with disabilities and promote more equitable learning environments.

This full-day event will showcase cutting-edge research and clinical advancements in ophthalmology, featuring distinguished guest speakers from across the country. In addition to invited lectures, the symposium will highlight research presentations and posters from UAB ophthalmology residents and fellows, providing a platform for emerging leaders in the field. UAB Arts in Medicine, in partnership with the UAB Department of Occupational Therapy, is excited to offer Virtual Magic Camp—a free, interactive program designed for youth with disabilities.

Participants (ages 9–18) will learn real magic tricks using the Hocus Focus™ curriculum developed by internationally recognized illusionist Kevin Spencer—all while building confidence, creativity, and connection.

Through this evidence-based program led by trained UAB occupational therapy students, campers don’t just learn magic—they strengthen motor skills, boost motivation, and develop social and emotional skills in a fun and supportive environment.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will learn the foundational strokes and techniques that form the basis of elegant script. In this class, we will use brush pens as an introduction to the art of calligraphy. Their flexible tips allow you to explore the graceful contrast between fine upstrokes and fuller downstrokes. This variation in line is the hallmark of elegant script and reflects the principles of traditional pointed pen calligraphy. Through guided practice, you will begin to develop rhythm, control, and confidence in your strokes. By session’s end, you will leave with beautifully practiced letterforms and the foundational skills to continue your calligraphy journey.

Who Can Apply

We encourage all global public health academics, researchers, practitioners and policymakers to register! The program is also open to advanced students with professional experience in global public health.

Approach

Implementation research helps to solve a range of implementation problems with evidence-supported interventions – and facilitates real-world health impact at scale. However, real-world impact cannot be achieved without addressing issues of health inequities – and this is especially true for global health. While there are several degrees and training programs in implementation research relevant to global health – there are very few that explicitly target issues of health inequities contextualized to global health settings.

The workshop combines 4 modules taught over 5 days, including:

High-level lectures | introducing IR in global health, and relevant IR concepts and approaches for addressing health inequities in global health research and practice.

Case examples | demonstrating the application of concepts and approaches from the lectures to real-world global health research and practice cases.

Problem-solving clinic | working with participants to apply IR concepts and approaches to their own global health research, practice, and/or policy cases to address health inequities.

Incorporating COIL can introduce motivating international dimensions to a course and also give opportunity for high-impact learning, offering clear benefits in both intercultural competency outcomes and career readiness. Inspired by the pinhole camera photography on view in Erin Jane Nelson’s exhibition, Living and Working, at AEIVA, workshop participants will learn about the history of photography and the development of pinhole and long-exposure techniques, create their own pinhole camera out of repurposed materials, and, using their cameras, make their own images to take home. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or curious beginner, this 3-hour workshop offers a unique opportunity to slow down, observe, and create one-of-a-kind images.

This workshop is free, but advance registration is required.
Registration will open in late May.

About the Artist

Jillian Marie Browning is an interdisciplinary artist pursuing themes of feminism, identity, and the contemporary black experience. Born in Ocala, Florida they received their Bachelor of Science degree in Photography from the University of Central Florida in 2012 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from Florida State University in 2015. Their work has been shown nationally and is included in the permanent collections of the Center for Photography at Woodstock, The Southeast Museum of Photography, and the University of Maryland’s David C. Driskell Center For The Study of Visual Arts and Culture Of African Americans and the African Diaspora.

This seven-day camp is held on UAB’s campus July 11-17, 2026. Throughout the week, students will learn, perfect, and perform trial skills through a reimagining of the Scottsboro Nine case. At the end of the week, students will present a full mock trial of the case in a real courtroom before friends and family. Housing and dining are included in the camp cost, and camp staff will be with students at all times.

Global Awareness: Navigating Global Differences with Intercultural Intelligence, Half Day

Description: UAB welcomes students and scholars from more than 80 countries to our campus each year, adding rich global perspectives to campus experiences. Even when we recognize what a great opportunity this is, however, differences in ways of thinking, being, and communicating among global cultures can occasionally cause misunderstandings, confusion, or even conflict. Because we want to help our international students be successful in their time at UAB, growing in our understanding of how to navigate some of these differences is a great goal. Join us to explore cross-cultural values and communication differences in this engaging half-day workshop to improve your global interactions at UAB with increasing levels of intercultural intelligence.

Alongside every great show is a great crew. This camp is designed for teens who love theatre but want to stay out of the spotlight…or maybe learn how to operate it! Guided by some of the region’s best technical theatre professionals, campers will learn the arts of lighting, sound, and stagecraft — supporting the Intermediate Musical Theatre Camp’s production of Disney’s Newsies Jr. from behind the curtain. There’s no need for prior theatre crew experience, just a collaborative spirit and eagerness to learn how Theatre is made.

Rather than theory or technical deep dives, this session explores practical, accessible tools that support everyday work and personal productivity. Topics include writing and editing, organizing ideas, planning projects, improving decision-making, and reducing routine friction. No technical background is required.

Christopher Hickman, Instructor in the UAB School of Nursing and Founder of Blueline Insights, brings a hands-on, educator-focused approach to AI. Drawing on real-world examples, he will demonstrate how AI can fit naturally into daily routines at work and at home, helping people think more clearly, work more efficiently, and focus their time where it matters most.

About Our Guest

Christopher is an Instructor at the UAB School of Nursing and the Founder of Blueline Insights. His work centers on the practical use of artificial intelligence and informatics to support education, decision-making, and everyday professional work. Christopher teaches graduate nursing students at UAB and regularly presents nationally on applied AI in education and healthcare, including invited keynote addresses. He emphasizes realistic, responsible uses of AI that save time, reduce friction, and help professionals focus on work that matters.

Advancing Your Teaching Career Building Block - Wednesdays in July, 12:00-1:30 p.m. (July 15, 22, 29)
